A pharmacist from Kuopio got excited about vaccinations and is already considering what services could be offered next
The number of pharmacies providing vaccinations in Finland is rapidly increasing, with over 150 pharmacies now offering vaccination services.
In Finland, the trend of pharmacies administering vaccinations is gaining momentum, with more than 150 pharmacies now involved in this practice. Last year, these pharmacies collectively provided approximately 26,000 vaccine doses. This surge follows a regulatory change in 2024, which allows pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to give vaccines under certain conditions, provided that they acquire a license and undergo appropriate training. This development is viewed positively by the pharmacy community, indicating a shift in the role of pharmacies in public health.
Pharmacists are eager to expand their services further, as illustrated by the comments from Eetu Räsänen, a pharmacist from Männistö in Kuopio. Räsänen, whose pharmacy joined the vaccination program last autumn, highlights the willingness of pharmacists to not only continue their current vaccination services but to also potentially distribute municipal flu vaccines as early as next fall. This would require support and action from local health authorities, amplifying the collaborative effort between pharmacies and healthcare providers.
The initiative has also attracted clients from outside Kuopio, where individuals on work trips have utilized the vaccination services. This growing trend reflects a broader strategy to integrate pharmacies into the healthcare system, enhancing access to vaccinations while adapting to the changing demands of public health. As demonstrated by this case in Kuopio, the pharmacy sector is positioning itself as an increasingly vital player in promoting community health.
