Travelers in Trouble Across the Country Due to Traction
Travelers in Iceland faced significant difficulties due to poor road conditions, leading to multiple rescue operations.
Many travelers in Iceland encountered serious difficulties due to hazardous road conditions on March 15, 2026. Rescue teams, including the Tálkni rescue squad, were activated throughout the night to assist stranded individuals across various regions. Reports indicate that the Rescue Association Landsbjörg was involved in these operations, which were notably concentrated in the Westfjords and the capital, Reykjavík.
The dangerous situations stemmed from significant ice and blizzard conditions, which caused numerous vehicles to become stuck. According to the announcement from Landsbjörg, just after 1 AM, the Scout Rescue Team from Reykjavík was deployed to Sandskeið to aid a large group of people hindered by visibility issues as well as poor traction on the roads. Many cars were reported stuck from Lækjarbotnar moving eastward, particularly in the vicinity of the Blue Mountains junctions, with substantial icy patches affecting drivers’ ability to control their vehicles.
In total, rescue operations managed to assist passengers in nearly 20 vehicles, either by transporting them back to town or freeing their cars and escorting them to safety. The operation concluded around 6 AM. Conditions in the area remain challenging as adverse weather continues to threaten safe travel for residents and tourists alike, emphasizing the importance of preparedness and caution during severe winter conditions in Iceland.
