KKE: Our people are paying dearly for involvement in the war

The KKE criticized Prime Minister Mitsotakis for calling NATO and EU involvement in Cyprus a defense of the country, claiming it is a pursuit of war spoils for European groups at the expense of the Greek people.

The Greek Communist Party (KKE) has condemned Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for his comments regarding NATO's protection of British bases in Cyprus. In a post by Mitsotakis, he termed the ongoing involvement of the EU in the conflict as a form of 'national defense', a statement the KKE refutes. They argue that this narrative serves only to justify the vested interests of European corporations, including Greek ones, seeking a share of the 'spoils' from the ongoing war, all under the guise of protecting national interest.

The KKE pointed out that during a recent trilateral meeting in Cyprus involving Mitsotakis and French President Emmanuel Macron, the issue of the Turkish occupation of Cyprus was notably ignored, highlighting a deceptive narrative put forth by the government that fails to address real threats to national integrity. The KKE's statements imply that the government is more focused on exploiting geopolitical tensions rather than ensuring the safety and well-being of its citizens.

Furthermore, they argue that the Greek populace is paying a high price for this military engagement, which includes costly military expenditures and rising energy prices. The KKE warns that such involvement could transform Greece into a target for retaliation, emphasizing that the continued silence on critical issues such as the occupation of part of Cyprus reflects a larger problem of prioritizing alliances over citizen welfare in Greece.
