VIDEO: photographer captures in Rondônia the song of a bird that can only be heard 15 days a year

The uirapuru bird, known for its elusive nature and beautiful song, can only be observed singing for a short period each year in the Amazon rainforest, particularly during its mating season.

The uirapuru, a mysterious bird found in the Amazon, is renowned for its elusive presence and its rare melodious song, which can only be heard for a mere 12 to 15 days a year during its breeding season. This bird plays a notable role in Amazonian folklore, often depicted as a warrior who traversed the forest while playing a bamboo flute. A recent video recorded in Porto Velho by researcher Luis Morais captures the enchanting song of the uirapuru, regarded as one of the most significant auditory treasures of the rainforest.

According to biologist and avian expert Guilherme Marietto, the uirapuru’s song is characterized as melodious and sweet, reminiscent of a flute, with impressive and complex notes that are sure to catch anyone's ear. The birds sing primarily during their mating season, which occurs between September and October. Once the male uirapuru successfully attracts a female, it stops singing until the next breeding cycle begins, adding to its rarity and desirability among birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Another interesting fact is that there are no visible differences between male and female uirapurus, making it challenging to distinguish between the sexes in the wild. This unique characteristic, combined with their limited singing period, highlights the uirapuru’s enigmatic nature and reinforces its status as a cultural icon in the region.
