After Renovation: Pope Leo XIV Has Moved In

Pope Leo XIV has officially moved into his renovated residence in the Apostolic Palace after it had remained empty during Pope Francis's tenure.

Pope Leo XIV has moved into his newly renovated apartment in the Apostolic Palace following significant refurbishments necessitated by its vacancy during the pontificate of Pope Francis. The renovation was necessary to prepare the living space for the new pope, who will share accommodations with his two private secretaries: Edgard Iván Rimaycuna Inga from Peru, and Marco Billeri from Italy. This new arrangement reflects a shift in the papal living conditions, with Pope Leo opting for a private sleeping area in the palace loggia for greater seclusion.

In addition to the bedrooms, the renovation has introduced a small fitness room and a terrace, enhancing the living environment of the pope and ensuring that he can maintain his health and well-being. Previously, Pope Leo had been residing at the Palazzo del Sant’Uffizio in the Vatican, where he lived during his service as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. This move marks a significant transition as he embarks on his papacy within a more personalized space designed for his needs.

The Vatican's protocol does not prescribe any elaborate ceremonies for a pope's relocation into his residence, apart from the blessing of the ten rooms. This understated transition highlights the practicality with which the Vatican approaches papal living arrangements, focusing on functionality and comfort rather than grandiosity. As Pope Leo XIV settles in, the streamlined focus on his duties and the welcoming of his support staff suggest a contemporary approach to the role of the pontiff in today’s Church.
