Kim Yoon-ji wins another gold medal...achieves record 5 medals in a single tournament
Kim Yoon-ji made history by winning five medals at the 2026 Winter Paralympics, the most ever for a Korean athlete in a single competition.
Kim Yoon-ji, competing in her first-ever Paralympics in Italy, not only participated in an impressive six events but also maintained her cheerful demeanor throughout the tournament. She made an outstanding accomplishment by winning a record total of five medals—two golds and three silvers—in a single competition, setting a new milestone for South Korean sports. Her performance notably surpasses the previous record of four medals held by other athletes in Olympic and Paralympic events, where those records included team relay results. Kim's five medals were all earned individually.
On March 15, during the women’s 20km sitting cross-country skiing event at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics, Kim secured her second gold medal in the tournament, clocking in at 58:23.3—making it her fifth overall medal at the games. This achievement makes her the first South Korean athlete to win five medals in a single tournament, combining her prior accomplishments from various events like biathlon. Importantly, Kim also holds the title of being the first South Korean to be a dual gold medalist at the Paralympics, showcasing her elite skills in both cross-country skiing and biathlon.
Despite challenging conditions, including snow and rain affecting course conditions, Kim's resilience shone. She finished the race strong, leading from the outset and overtaking legendary skier Oksana Masters during the competition. Kim had previously triumphed in a 12.5 km biathlon event, becoming the first South Korean female athlete to earn gold at a Winter Paralympics, illustrating her remarkable prowess across multiple disciplines and solidifying her place in sports history.
