Kristin Lätt: Our mother tongue is like a secret language understood by only one grain of sand in the world

Estonia's Mother Language Day was celebrated with calls to preserve the Estonian language, highlighted by comments from world disc golf champion Kristin Lätt.

On March 14, Estonia celebrated Mother Language Day, during which President Alar Karis emphasized the importance of maintaining the Estonian language as diverse, rich, and alive, declaring that without it, Estonia itself would not exist. The president encouraged citizens to take pride in their mother tongue and contribute to its vitality, making it a cornerstone of Estonian identity and culture.

On the same day, world disc golf champion Kristin Lätt shared her reflections on the Estonian language, expressing that through her travels, she has come to view it as a 'secret language' that only a minute fraction of the global population truly understands. Lätt conveyed a heartfelt message on social media, stating that the Estonian language feels special to her because it is a unique tongue that can be appreciated by only one tiny grain of sand among the 8 billion people on Earth.

The celebrations included a public reading event in Kadriorg, where 70 individuals, consisting of notable figures from culture, education, science, literature, music, and sports, read Estonian texts from sunrise to sunset. This initiative showcased the community's commitment to honoring their language, reinforcing the idea that Estonian is not a secret that needs to be hidden but a rich linguistic heritage that can be proudly shared and celebrated both within and beyond the country’s borders.
