Students at MR deliver petition to the principal
Students from Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík presented a petition to the principal advocating for the continuation of Latin instruction in their curriculum.
On March 11, students from the fourth grade at Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík (MR) met with the school principal, Sólveig Guðrúnu Hannesdóttir, to submit two petitions. The petitions were significant as they reflected the students' desires to maintain Latin as part of their education. The first petition, which had been circulated within the school, demanded that Latin continue to be taught in the fourth grade of the language track and also requested that Latin education not be diminished in the ancient language track of the school.
In recent weeks, there have been discussions among former students regarding the potential decision to eliminate Latin instruction in the first year of the program. With over three hundred signatures collected, the petitions signify a strong opposition to possible curriculum changes that could impact the legacy of classical education at MR. This reflects not only the students' passion for their studies but also highlights the broader debate on the place of classical languages in modern education.
The impact of this petition could have significant implications for the school's curriculum design and the ongoing dialogue about educational priorities in Iceland. As language education evolves, the demand for retaining traditional offerings like Latin presents an opportunity for educational stakeholders to engage with students and alumni to ensure a diverse and comprehensive curriculum that reflects both contemporary and classical perspectives.
