Smells of Sulfur in Tenerife - Here We Prepare for the Worst

Tenerife is preparing for a potential volcanic eruption as seismic activity has increased significantly in the region.

Tenerife is currently bracing for a possible volcanic eruption due to increased seismic activity surrounding the Teide volcano, with over 6,000 earthquakes recorded in a span of three weeks. The Santa Cruz city council has established a technical department tasked with developing an official response plan for the scenario of an eruption. This proactive measure reflects the seriousness of the situation as scientists have deemed the current levels of activity abnormal and have signaled potential eruptions are a real concern.

José Manuel Bermúdez, the mayor of Santa Cruz, emphasized that while the city itself is unlikely to suffer directly from an eruption, it is preparing contingencies to support other areas of Tenerife that might be severely affected. Plans are in place to potentially accommodate evacuees and ensure the continuity of logistical and water services in the event of an eruption. The mayor highlighted that the city's ability to manage the situation will largely depend on the magnitude of the eruption, should it occur.

The Teide volcano, which is located in the heart of Tenerife, has a history of eruptions, with the last major event occurring in 1909. This history, combined with the current seismic activity, has raised alarms among the local population and authorities alike, prompting them to take necessary precautions. The city council's initiative to develop a structured response plan signifies the need for preparedness in the face of geological threats, ensuring the safety and resilience of the community during potential emergencies.
