Now it is certain: F1 races canceled

The FIA announced the cancellation of the Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia scheduled for April due to the ongoing situation in the Middle East.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) declared on Saturday that the Formula 1 races in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, planned for April, have been canceled due to the deteriorating situation in the Middle East. The race in Bahrain was set for April 12, with the Saudi Arabian race following on April 19. The decision was made in close collaboration with the Formula One Group, local organizers, and national associations in the region. The FIA did not provide information on whether the races would be rescheduled or replaced with others.

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the organization's commitment to prioritizing the safety and well-being of the community and officials involved. He expressed hope for peace, safety, and a rapid return to stability in the Middle East. The cancellation is a direct outcome of security concerns stemming from the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has led to increased tensions and even attacks, such as one on a U.S. naval base in Bahrain, located approximately 30 kilometers from the Formula 1 circuit.

Despite the cancelation of these races, the Formula 1 calendar continues with races in other locations, such as the upcoming event in Shanghai, China, scheduled for this weekend. The situation highlights the complex interrelationship between international sports and global geopolitical tensions, which can directly impact the planning and execution of major sporting events.
