National Shrine of St. Joseph in Karlovac declared a minor basilica

The National Shrine of St. Joseph in Karlovac has been designated a minor basilica by the Vatican, highlighting its significance to the liturgical and pastoral life of the local Church.

The Vatican has officially designated the National Shrine of St. Joseph in Karlovac as a minor basilica, a title awarded to churches of significant importance to the liturgical and pastoral life of the area. This status emphasizes the shrine's close connection to the Pope and its role in the religious life of the local Catholic community. The decision was made by the Vatican's Dicastery for Worship and the Discipline of Sacraments in early 2026, recognizing the shrine's importance within the Catholic Church in Croatia.

The shrine was constructed between 1968 and 1974 and was declared a national shrine in 1987. Since then, it has become one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage sites in Croatia, attracting numerous visitors and faithful. The recognition as a minor basilica further solidifies its status and highlights its integral role in the spiritual and community life of the region, particularly among the Catholic population.

To celebrate this honor, a festive mass was held, led by the Archbishop of Zagreb, Monsignor Dražen Kutleša, with the assistance of the auxiliary bishop Marko Kovač, who blessed the "Holy Doors" at the National Shrine. The celebrations for the declaration will continue throughout the week, engaging the local community and emphasizing the cultural and religious significance of the shrine in Karlovac.
