Brasília is elected Ibero-American Capital of Cultural Heritage; see what this means
Brasília has been designated as the Ibero-American Capital of Cultural Heritage, recognizing its historical and cultural significance.
This week, Brasília was awarded the title of Ibero-American Capital of Cultural Heritage during the opening of an international meeting hosted by the Ibero-American Capital Cities Union (UCCI) at the Palácio do Buriti. The event's main focus was the exchange of best practices in city management, the reinforcement of historical identity, and the discussion of collective strategies for the protection of both material and immaterial heritage. This accolade signifies a recognition of the efforts to preserve and promote the cultural richness of the city, which has been acknowledged as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
The decision was reached through consensus among the member cities, highlighting Brasília's importance not only in Brazil but also within a larger Ibero-American context. The UCCI, founded in Madrid in 1982, comprises 29 cities from 24 countries, representing over 76 million inhabitants. This recognition is poised to strengthen Brasília's international ties and enhance its cultural stature, inviting further dialogue about historical preservation and cultural management within urban settings.
According to the Secretary of International Relations for the Federal District, Paco Britto, this title underscores the significance of Brasília's ongoing efforts in cultural heritage management. The acknowledgment serves not only as an honor but also as a call to action for city leaders to continue fostering relationships aimed at cultural preservation while sharing successful models of urban heritage management across the Ibero-American region.
