After Promising to Rescue Them.. Iranian Opposition Turns Against Trump

Iranian opposition groups are expressing disappointment towards the U.S. administration due to the humanitarian impact of U.S.-Israeli strikes in the country.

The mood among Iranian opposition members within the country has shifted to disappointment regarding the U.S. administration, primarily due to the devastating effects of U.S.-Israeli military actions that targeted Iran's infrastructure and cultural sites, leading to hundreds of casualties. According to a report by The Guardian, many victims of the recent arrests and killings of protesters had placed their hopes in President Donald Trump's promise that the United States would come to their aid. However, just two weeks following the aerial bombings, sentiments among Iranians have begun to sour towards Washington.

In the report titled "You Are All Worse Than Each Other.. Iranian Opposition Turns Against Trump," journalist Deepa Barnett collected opinions from multiple dissidents, including a student who preferred to remain anonymous. This student expressed that he had initially harbored greater hopes for the actions of the U.S. and Israel. The turning point for him came when Israel targeted fuel depots in Tehran, which resulted in thick black smoke shrouding the skies of the capital. Additionally, he articulated feeling abandoned by external allies who had promised support during their struggle for change against the Iranian regime.

As the opposition grapples with increasing disillusionment, they are now questioning the reliability of Western promises, particularly in a context where hope for effective international intervention seemed promising at first but rapidly deteriorated in the face of humanitarian crises. This shift in sentiment among the Iranian opposition may impact future protest dynamics and their interactions with foreign powers, highlighting the complexities of external involvement in internal struggles for democracy and reform within Iran.
