3.53 million: number of refugees in Germany slightly decreased
The number of refugees in Germany has decreased slightly to 3.53 million as of the end of 2025, with a significant portion coming from Ukraine.
As of December 31, 2025, Germany is home to approximately 3.53 million refugees, showing a slight decrease of about 17,000 from the previous year. This data comes from a report responding to a parliamentary inquiry by the Left Party and was made available to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur. Over one-third of these refugees are individuals fleeing from the conflict in Ukraine, highlighting the ongoing impact of the war on migration patterns in Europe.
In the previous year, the number of refugees in Germany was reported at around 3.54 million, reflecting the complex dynamics of refugee movements. The decrease can be attributed to various factors, including the natural aging of the refugee population, voluntary departures, as well as cases of deportation and naturalization. Specifically, approximately 1.33 million of the current refugees are war refugees from Ukraine, and roughly 707,000 have been officially recognized under the Geneva Refugee Convention.
This slight decline in refugee numbers feeds into a broader discussion about migration policies in Germany and the EU, especially as the country navigates the balance between humanitarian responsibilities and domestic pressures. The situation continues to unfold as the government adapts its policies to address both the immediate needs of refugees and the long-term implications of sustained migration flows amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
