Nigeria’s First Lady Oluremi Tinubu opened a Senior Citizens Centre in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, during the International Women’s Day celebration, emphasizing its role in enhancing the welfare of senior citizens.
Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, participated in a significant event in Uyo, Akwa Ibom, to celebrate International Women’s Day 2026, which was attended by over 5,000 participants. The celebration, themed "Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls," highlighted the importance of women’s rights and the welfare of the elderly. During the event, a state-of-the-art Senior Citizens Centre was officially commissioned, dedicated to the memory of the late Patience Eno, the wife of the current state governor.
The newly inaugurated centre aims to improve the standards of living for senior citizens, providing them with essential healthcare, recreation, and social support services. First Lady Tinubu praised Governor Eno for actualizing this vision, viewing the initiative as a meaningful step towards enhancing the dignity and quality of life for the elderly population. The centre represents not just a physical space but a commitment to honoring and caring for those who have contributed to society.
Additionally, Governor Eno highlighted that the centre aligns with the state’s existing welfare schemes for the elderly, catering to approximately 600 senior citizens. This development marks a progressive shift in societal attitudes toward aging and support for the elderly, underscoring the importance of community-driven initiatives in securing rights and dignified living conditions for all citizens.
