Straight Talk from Teachers about Foreign Language Students: "No Chance of Survival"

Teachers express serious concerns about the challenges faced by foreign language students in Finnish schools, highlighting their struggles due to inadequate support.

A newly published book sheds light on the difficult realities faced by foreign language students in Finnish schools, as conveyed by educators. Teachers describe how many of these students come into the classroom with little to no proficiency in Finnish, which significantly hampers their ability to integrate and succeed alongside native students. One teacher noted their frustration at being unprepared to assist a complete beginner who is placed in a mainstream class, reiterating a sense of resignation about the current educational structures that fail to provide adequate support.

The book, titled "What’s Really Happening in Upper Secondary Schools?" authored by Ville Pernaa, Risto Rinne, Hannu Simola, and Erika Carlson, compiles experiences from around one hundred upper secondary school teachers. Their accounts reveal a broader picture of an education system where teachers are expected to take on multiple roles—mentors, police, and even psychiatric caregivers. This overwhelming burden emerges as a central theme, reflecting a system that places considerable pressure on teachers while inadequately addressing the needs of its diverse student population.

The grading for foreign language students (S2) presented in the book, where they often receive average scores around 6+, paints a stark picture of the system's failure to meet the unique challenges these students face. The discussions suggest an urgent need for curriculum reform and better teacher training programs to equip educators with the necessary tools to effectively support students of varied linguistic backgrounds. Without significant changes, the bleak outlook for foreign language students will likely persist, hindering their potential to thrive within the Finnish educational landscape.
