Slovakia abandons blocking the renewal of sanctions against Russia
Slovakia has withdrawn its objections to the renewal of EU sanctions against Russia, leading to a six-month extension of measures against 2,600 individuals and entities.
Slovakia has opted not to block the renewal of European Union sanctions against Russia, resulting in the extension of penalties against 2,600 individuals and entities for an additional six months. This decision was announced by the EU on Saturday and comes after Slovakia had previously demanded the removal of two names from the sanctions list β Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, one of the founders of the Alpha Group. Despite its demands, Slovakia was not able to secure any changes, with the EU extending the sanctions until September 15, the day before the end of the previous six-month period.
The sanctions were imposed following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, and the EU emphasized its unified stance against Russia's actions. The Council of the EU requires unanimous support for sanction extensions, which put Slovakia in a strategic position as it had previously threatened to withhold its support unless its demands were met. However, ultimately, Slovakia had to concede, reflecting the complexities and negotiations inherent in EU foreign policy, especially regarding Russia.
Furthermore, the EU also reported that, while two names were indeed removed from the sanctions list, the identities of these individuals were not disclosed. The list also saw updates to include the removal of names linked to deceased individuals. This development comes amid a broader context of tensions between Russia and EU member states, particularly those like Slovakia and Hungary, which have expressed hesitance in uniformly agreeing to stringent sanctions due to their historical ties with Russia.
