Baños and Patate on alert for active land movements: A displacement of 45 centimeters was recorded in the high area of Illuchi over one year

Tungurahua's provincial emergency committee has declared an alert due to significant land movement in Baños and Patate, areas vulnerable to landslides during the rainy season.

The provincial emergency committee of Tungurahua, Ecuador, has been activated in response to a yellow alert concerning land movements in the region, as well as a national emergency declared by the National Risk Management Secretariat. This proactive measure aims to prepare and address any emergencies that may arise due to the rainy season, ensuring the safety of local residents.

Authorities have identified Baños de Agua Santa and Patate as particularly vulnerable areas, where numerous active landslides have been observed. Notably, in the Quilloturo sector of the Río Verde parish in Baños, the community is still recovering from a previous landslide incident in 2024 that resulted in eleven fatalities and substantial property damage. Additionally, warnings regarding instability in the Illuchi area have been ongoing as the region experiences continuous geological activity.

In Patate, residents of the El Triunfo parish are facing issues with damaged roads that connect them to the central municipality, which could hinder emergency response efforts and daily travel. The situation emphasizes the importance of ongoing monitoring and response planning by local authorities, especially with the onset of adverse weather conditions that threaten the safety and infrastructure of these communities.
