The European Union extends sanctions against Russia for six months
The EU has unanimously decided to extend sanctions against Russia for another six months, now valid until September 15, 2026.
The Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the European Council has unanimously agreed to extend the restrictive measures against individuals responsible for undermining the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine. This extension prolongs the sanctions until September 15, 2026, reflecting the European Union's ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
The decision comes after intense discussions, highlighting the EU's unified stance against any attempts to weaken the sanctions imposed on Russia. The Latvian government has remained actively involved in the negotiations, emphasizing the need to maintain a robust sanctions list, which currently includes over 2,700 entities. This proactive approach aims to deter any politically motivated efforts to remove certain individuals from the sanctions list.
Regular reviews of the sanctions framework will continue, guided by legal assessments from the European Council's Legal Service. The discussions surrounding these sanctions ensure that the evidence supporting the sanctions against designated individuals is continually evaluated, reinforcing the EU's legal and ethical framework in maintaining these measures against Russia. This step signifies the EU's determination to uphold its sanctions policy as a crucial aspect of its foreign relations and security strategy regarding the situation in Ukraine.
