Kimi Antonelli becomes the youngest in history to win pole position

Italian Kimi Antonelli has made history by becoming the youngest driver to secure pole position in Formula 1 at the age of 19 during the qualifying session for the Chinese Grand Prix.

Kimi Antonelli, a 19-year-old Italian driver, made headlines this Saturday by securing pole position for the Chinese Grand Prix, thereby becoming the youngest driver in Formula 1 history to achieve this milestone. He surpassed the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 21 years old when he attained pole for the Italian Grand Prix in 2008. Antonelli's qualifying lap was impressive, clocking in at 1 minute and 32.046 seconds, putting him 0.222 seconds ahead of his competitors and showcasing his exceptional talent behind the wheel.

In addition to Antonelli's historic achievement, this qualifying session highlighted the dominance of the Mercedes team, as Antonelli's teammate George Russell will start alongside him on the front row. Brazilian driver Gabriel Bortoleto, racing for Audi, will begin the race from 16th position. Antonelli expressed his excitement about his performance, stating, "I’m very happy to be on pole for the first time", and described the session as clean with no errors, reflecting his preparation and focus for the upcoming race.

The qualifying session also featured notable challenges for other prominent drivers, such as Lando Norris and Max Verstappen, who encountered difficulties that impacted their performance. As the F1 community turns its attention to the race on Sunday, Antonelli’s remarkable achievement not only adds to his burgeoning career but also sets the stage for a competitive race among the top teams in Shanghai.
