How to Recognize a Person You Shouldn't Let into Your Home - Fire Chief Advises

A Finnish fire chief provides advice on how to identify legitimate fire inspectors to prevent scams by impostors.

Tytti Oksanen, the interim fire chief of the Pirkanmaa Fire Department, has issued a warning to residents about impostors posing as fire inspectors. Recent incidents have occurred in Sastamala and Hämeenkyrö, where individuals pretending to be fire inspectors have attempted to gain access to people's homes. Oksanen stresses the importance of knowing the distinguishing features that set real fire inspectors apart from fraudulent ones.

Oksanen highlights that legitimate fire inspectors will always arrive in official vehicles marked with the fire department's insignia and flashing lights. Furthermore, they will be wearing official uniforms, which, while they may differ in style, will consistently display the fire department's emblem. She emphasizes that the presence of these identifiers is crucial for residents to feel secure about the individuals they allow into their homes.

In addition to visible badges and uniforms, Oksanen points out that all fire inspectors carry official identification cards and encourages citizens to ask for this ID if it is not immediately presented. This step can help prevent potential scams and ensure that individuals are who they claim to be, allowing residents to maintain a sense of safety within their communities. The fire department is actively working to keep the public informed about these issues to combat the rising trend of impersonation.
