Operator of 'stop and follow' dies after accident on SE-170
A traffic operator died and another was injured in an accident on the SE-170 highway involving two cars and a truck.
A tragic accident occurred on the SE-170 highway, claiming the life of a 57-year-old traffic operator and resulting in another individual being injured. The incident took place near the bridge over the Vaza Barris River, at the boundary between the municipalities of Lagarto and São Domingos. According to the Rural Shock Police Battalion (BPRV), the accident was caused by a truck that failed to stop in time, colliding into vehicles that were already stationary as they awaited the resumption of traffic due to ongoing construction work on the bridge.
The circumstances leading up to the accident involved two vehicles waiting for the 'stop and follow' system to allow traffic to flow towards São Domingos when, upon traffic release, a truck was unable to brake effectively and crashed into the rear of the stopped cars. The impact was severe, causing the vehicles to be pushed forward and the truck to overturn after hitting the guardrail of the bridge, ultimately landing in a ravine beneath the structure. This unfortunate chain of events highlights the dangers present during roadworks and the vital need for effective traffic management in such situations.
Additionally, two employees from the company overseeing the construction were hit during the process, further illustrating the hazards faced by operators controlling traffic in construction zones. The incident has sparked concerns over road safety measures and the importance of adhering to traffic protocols in areas where construction is taking place, as such accidents can have deadly consequences for both road users and infrastructure workers.
