Belgian Prime Minister Calls on the EU to Negotiate with Russia for Peace in Ukraine
The Belgian Prime Minister urges the EU to engage in negotiations with Russia for a peace deal regarding Ukraine, stating that without strong US support, forcing Russia to concede is unlikely.
Belgian Prime Minister, Bart De Wever, has called for the European Union to initiate negotiations with Russia to achieve peace in Ukraine. During an interview with the Belgian newspaper L'Echo, he acknowledged the limitations of Europe's current strategy, which heavily relies on military support and economic pressure, particularly from the United States. De Wever pointed out that without a united front from the US, it is challenging for the EU to effectively influence Russia's actions, claiming that imposing significant pressure on President Putin is only feasible with full American backing.
The Prime Minister expressed concerns over the US's commitment to Ukraine, arguing that at times, it seems the US is closer to Putin than to the leaders in Kyiv. He emphasized the necessity of direct dialogue with Moscow, cautioning that without it, the EU stands to accept unfavorable terms. The lack of a decisive EU mandate to directly engage in negotiations raises questions about the strength of its position at the negotiating table, particularly as the US also seems willing to push Ukraine towards a deal, potentially at the expense of Ukrainian security and sovereignty.
De Wever's comments reflect a growing sentiment among some European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, about the importance of re-establishing dialogue with Russia to end the current conflict sparked by the invasion that began in February 2022. The push for negotiations comes at a critical time when the consequences of a prolonged war in Ukraine may increasingly call for diplomatic solutions rather than continued military escalation, highlighting the complexities of international relations and the balancing act of national interests amidst war.
