The winners of the Cultural Capital's literature awards were unveiled during a ceremony in Estonia to celebrate Mother Language Day.
The Cultural Capital of Estonia traditionally celebrated Mother Language Day by announcing the winners of its literature awards for the year 2025. The event took place in the Black Hall of the Writers' House, where laureates in various categories including prose, poetry, children's literature, translation, and essays were revealed. The awards are intended to recognize significant contributions to literature, showcasing the remarkable talents within the Estonian literary community.
The selection of the laureates was made by juries appointed by the Cultural Capital's literature fund, highlighting a diverse array of significant works that contribute to the Estonian literary landscape. The main jury, consisting of Elisa-Johanna Liiv (chair), Maarja Vaino, and Tiit Aleksejev, particularly emphasized the depth and creativity found in the nominated works. Among the notable winners was Mehis Heinsaar for his collection "Eesti keelde sukelduja" ("Diving into the Estonian Language"), which was praised for its enchanting narratives that explore both familiar and fantastical realms of existence.
Elisa-Johanna Liiv remarked that Heinsaar's stories excel at merging reality with imagination, providing readers with a unique literary experience. Jury member Tiit Aleksejev reflected on the extraordinary wonders present in Estonian life as captured in Heinsaarβs writing. This event not only honors the celebrated authors but also reinforces the importance of literature in shaping cultural identity and preserving the Estonian language, especially on a day dedicated to its recognition.
