Abandoned amusement park in UK seaside town to reopen – it is 125 years old

The historic Kursaal amusement park in Southend-on-Sea, which has been closed since 2020, is set to reopen after a lease transfer, marking a significant revival of a location that has been a part of the local community for over 120 years.

The Kursaal, believed to be the world's first amusement park, originally opened in 1901 in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. After shutting its doors in 2020, the Grade-II listed amusement park fell into disrepair over the years, becoming a shadow of its former self. The park has hosted famous acts like Queen and AC/DC, but it has remained largely unused since its closure, prompting concerns about its preservation and future.

Recently, the property group AEW announced plans to transfer the lease of the Kursaal to Star Amusements, which is expected to facilitate the park's reopening by the end of the summer. Prior to the reopening, significant repairs and renovations will take place to revive the once vibrant amusement park, ensuring it meets safety standards while preserving its historical significance. This step is seen as a vital move for Southend-on-Sea, where the Kursaal remains a cultural and architectural landmark.

Local leaders, including Southend-on-Sea City Council leader Daniel Cowan, have emphasized the importance of the Kursaal to the town's identity and tourism. The reopening is anticipated to bring renewed energy to the seaside town, attracting visitors and restoring a key part of the community's rich history, providing much-needed jobs and improving the local economy.
