Facebook dating site romance fraudster conned lonely men out of £8,000

Leonnie Robson, a 35-year-old from Great Yarmouth, defrauded vulnerable men out of more than £8,000 through a series of fake romantic relationships on Facebook and other dating sites.

Leonnie Robson, a 35-year-old woman from Great Yarmouth, has been exposed as a serial romance fraudster who preyed on lonely men through social media and dating platforms. Over the course of more than a year, she established phony romantic relationships with her victims, crafting elaborate stories to extract money from them. Her fraudulent activities were particularly ruthless, as she targeted vulnerable individuals, including one man whom she pressured into giving her the last £1.07 in his bank account.

Between March 2024 and May 2025, Robson used various deceptive narratives involving illness, domestic violence, and personal loss to gain the trust of her targets. After building rapport, she would often start by requesting small amounts of money for trivial reasons—such as paying for electricity or gas—before escalating her demands significantly. Collectively, her victims sent her a staggering £8,176, ultimately leading to significant emotional and financial distress.

The case underscores the growing issue of online scams, particularly those that exploit the inherent vulnerabilities of individuals seeking companionship. As online dating and social media become increasingly prevalent, there is a critical need for awareness around such fraudulent schemes. Authorities continue to encourage victims of cybercrime to report such incidents to prevent further exploitation by perpetrators like Robson and to protect others from falling prey to similar scams.
