Germany Live Blog: New Coalition in Brandenburg Established
The SPD and CDU in Brandenburg have successfully established a coalition agreement with overwhelming support from their party members.
In Brandenburg, the coalition agreement between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has successfully passed the final hurdle after receiving substantial backing from party members. During a state party convention in Potsdam, SPD delegates voted overwhelmingly in favor of the coalition, with 96% approving the agreement. This positive outcome follows a similar show of support from the CDU, where around 83% of its members approved the coalition during a prior survey.
The formation of this red-black coalition comes after the previous coalition between the SPD and the left-leaning BSW collapsed. The new coalition partners aim to govern together for approximately three and a half years until the next state elections, indicating a commitment to stability in Brandenburgβs political landscape. Both parties are likely to focus on collaborative governance and addressing pressing issues in the region, which includes economic development and social policies.
However, the coalition could face challenges and scrutiny as it proposes to tackle various sensitive issues, including the funding for asylum advisory services and the issuance of hardship visas since the suspension of family reunifications. Their ability to navigate these complex matters while maintaining party unity will be crucial for the longevity and success of their coalition government in the coming years.
