Unpaid carers in the UK are facing demands from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) to repay thousands of pounds in benefits for allegedly breaching carer's allowance earnings rules, even as officials recognized that these rules were based on unlawful and discredited guidance. Approximately 1,400 carers received letters in January informing them of repayment requests that stemmed from obsolete regulations which had been scrapped just four months earlier. This has raised concerns among campaigners about the DWP's decision to proceed with issuing overpayment notifications without first reassessing cases in line with the new guidance.
