'I wouldn't do anything differently,' says Haddad about his management of the Ministry of Finance

Minister Fernando Haddad affirmed that he would not change anything about his management as he prepares to leave the Ministry of Finance to run for elections.

On Friday, Finance Minister Fernando Haddad confirmed during an interview that he will be a candidate in this year's elections, stating that he would not change anything from his time leading the Ministry of Finance since January 2023. His departure from the ministry is expected to be formalized next week. In his conversation on the program '20 Minutos' with the Opera Mundi portal, Haddad reflected on his achievements and repudiated the label of 'taxer' applied by his political adversaries.

Haddad defended the government's approach, highlighting that no progressive could accuse his administration of unfairness since it aimed to rectify the tax system by ensuring that those who could afford to contribute did so. He mentioned targeting previously exempt groups, like holders of offshore funds and those profiting from dividends and betting operations, to ensure a fairer tax landscape. The Minister emphasized the significance of these reforms in fostering equity within the Brazilian economy.

With Haddad expected to be succeeded by Dario Durigan, the current Executive Secretary of Finance, the implications of this leadership change may affect the Ministry's strategic direction as Brazil navigates its economic challenges. As Haddad transitions to a political role, his legacy in the Ministry may be scrutinized against the backdrop of upcoming electoral dynamics, particularly in discussions around economic reform and fiscal responsibility in Brazil.
