Large avalanche near Siglufjörður and the road closed

A large avalanche has occurred outside Siglufjörður, prompting road closures due to avalanche risks.

A significant avalanche fell near Siglufjörður, leading to the closure of the Siglufjarðarveg road from Ketilás to Strákaganga. As a result, an avalanche warning is in effect on the northern part of Tröllaskagi. Ólíver Hilmarsson, an avalanche specialist from the Icelandic Meteorological Office, confirmed the avalanche's occurrence, indicating a continuing risk of avalanches in the northern Westfjords since Wednesday. The situation has escalated from a warning level to an emergency level, highlighting the seriousness of the conditions.

In addition to Siglufjörður’s road closure, uncertainty warnings are now active in Eyjafjörður and the general area of Tröllaskagi, underscoring the widespread impact of this weather event. The severity of the snowfall and shifting snow conditions led to the classification adjustments, placing many areas at heightened risk. Yellow weather warnings will come into effect in Northwest Iceland and the Westfjords tonight, further indicating the potential for dangerous weather conditions.

Despite the closures around Siglufjörður, traffic has been reopened on Súðavíkurhlíð and Flateyrarveg following their earlier closure this week. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise the public to stay updated on any further developments, as winter weather is expected to persist across the region.
