Israel Strikes Near Finnish Peacekeeping Base in Lebanon – Health Center Destroyed

Israel conducted an airstrike on a health center in Burj Qallawiyah, southern Lebanon, leading to at least 12 fatalities among medical personnel, according to Lebanese authorities.

On Friday evening, Israel launched an airstrike on a health center located in the village of Burj Qallawiyah in southern Lebanon. Multiple Lebanese news outlets and the AFP news agency reported the incident, highlighting that at least twelve people, including doctors, nurses, and ambulance workers, were killed. The Lebanese Ministry of Health condemned the attack, labeling it a violation of international law and signaling a severe escalation in the ongoing conflict in the region.

The health center targeted by the airstrike is situated very close to the United Nations peacekeeping forces' bases, specifically UNP 9-1 and UNP 9-10, with 9-1 being a major base for Finnish peacekeepers. Finnish troops serve within the UNIFIL command reserve, working alongside French soldiers. UNIFIL did not immediately communicate whether any peacekeepers participated in rescue efforts at the health center post-strike, raising concerns about the safety and involvement of international forces in the volatile area.

Historically, Burj Qallawiyah has significance for the Finnish peacekeeping operations in Lebanon, as it hosted the Finnish battalion's headquarters during the 1980s before it relocated to the nearby 9-1 base towards the end of that decade. The ongoing military actions raise pressing questions about the stability of the region and the protective measures required for both local populations and international peacekeepers amid escalating hostilities between Israel and militant groups in Lebanon.
