During a graduation ceremony at the National Defense Academy in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi emphasized Japan's commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities. She outlined plans to accelerate the revision of three key security documents within the year, asserting that her administration will explore all options, including the structure of the Ministry of Defense and the Self-Defense Forces, to robustly protect the lives and property of the Japanese people. Takaichi's remarks reflect a significant shift in Japan's defense posture in light of regional threats.

In her speech, Takaichi pointed to the increasing military capabilities of Russia, particularly in light of its invasion of Ukraine, as well as the arms buildup by China and North Korea. She conveyed that the security environment surrounding Japan is the most severe and complex since World War II, indicating an urgent need for a reevaluation of national defense strategies. By underscoring the gravity of the situation, she signaled that Japan must prepare for a multitude of scenarios that may threaten its national security.

The graduation ceremony also saw 366 officer candidates, including 46 women, complete their training, while 34 candidates chose to decline commissions. Additionally, 19 international students from countries such as Thailand and Vietnam graduated, highlighting collaborative defense efforts in the region. This ceremony marked a pivotal moment for Japan's military future as it faces new challenges and seeks to adapt its defense strategies accordingly.
