North Korea fires unidentified projectile into the East Sea... Protests against US-South Korea exercises
North Korea has launched an unidentified projectile into the East Sea, marking its third act of provocation this year in response to ongoing US-South Korea military exercises.
On the 14th, North Korea launched an unidentified projectile into the East Sea, as confirmed by the Joint Chiefs of Staff. They are currently analyzing the specifications and range of the projectile. This marks North Korea's third act of provocation in 2023, following a ballistic missile launch on January 27. If confirmed as a ballistic missile, this will be only 47 days since the last launch.
The recent launch is interpreted as a display of military might in response to the US-South Korea joint military exercises, which are taking place from September 9 to 19, aimed at preparing for contingencies on the Korean Peninsula. Although the US and South Korea have reduced outdoor maneuver exercises compared to previous years, North Korea continues to protest, referring to these drills as hostile "invasion exercises".
Kim Yo-jong, a senior official of North Korea's ruling party, issued a statement the day after the drills commenced, warning that the military demonstrations by rival powers probing the agro-security domain of their nation could lead to horrifying consequences. This highlights the ongoing tension in the region, where both military drills and provocative launches exacerbate the fragile security situation.
