Attack targets the US embassy in Baghdad as smoke rises from it
The US embassy in Baghdad was attacked, leading to alarm sirens and visible smoke from within the premises.
The US embassy located in Baghdad's Green Zone was reportedly targeted in an attack that triggered alarm sirens and resulted in significant smoke billowing from the building. According to Al Jazeera's reporter, this incident marks one of the most powerful explosions in the area since the onset of the US-Israeli conflict with Iran, although there was no recorded activation of air defense systems at the time, which contrasts with previous instances when such attacks were successfully intercepted.
An Iraqi security source mentioned that the attack caused damages to part of the embassy's air defense system. Initial estimates suggest that the strike might have hit either a watchtower or a radar system on the roof of the embassy. This escalation follows an earlier attack in the Karrada residential area of Baghdad, where a house was nearly completely destroyed, reportedly targeting a leader of one of the Iraqi factions. Following this, another explosion was heard in Southwest Baghdad, aimed at a parked truck.
This latest wave of attacks raises serious concerns about security in the region, specifically targeting foreign diplomatic missions. With the US embassy being a high-profile target, this incident could represent a significant shift in the tactics employed by armed factions within Iraq, reflecting growing tensions and the potential for increased violence against foreign entities in the region, as geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve amidst ongoing conflicts.
