After the night trains were discontinued β air traffic to Kiruna is now being expanded
SAS will introduce new flights from Kiruna to Stockholm, making it easier for residents and visitors to travel to and from the region.
In response to the discontinuation of night trains, SAS plans to enhance connectivity for residents of Kiruna and the surrounding areas by introducing daily flights to Stockholm starting on October 25. This initiative will allow locals to travel to the capital for the day and return in the evening, improving accessibility for both residents and visitors. The CEO of Kiruna Lappland, Peter Salomonsson, emphasized that this development not only benefits Kiruna's residents but also enhances travel options for those in nearby towns like GΓ€llivare and Pajala, facilitating easier connections to Europe and beyond.
In addition to the new flights from Kiruna, SAS will also increase the number of departures from Copenhagen to Kiruna, responding to the growing international interest in Scandinavian winter tourism. The number of weekly flights will rise from two to three during the peak season, running from December 17 to March 7. This expansion is seen as a significant boon for the local tourism industry, attracting more visitors to experience the winter attractions that the region has to offer.
However, whether these new air options will adequately compensate for the loss of night train services remains to be seen. The changes mark a significant shift in transportation dynamics within the region, prompting discussions about the long-term implications for both residents and tourism as air travel becomes a more integral part of their travel plans.
