Niger teenager kills friend with father’s gun

A 16-year-old boy in Niger allegedly shot and killed his 15-year-old friend while playing with a loaded gun owned by his father, leading to both boys' families facing legal consequences.

The tragic incident occurred on March 1 in Suleja Local Government Area of Niger State when Jacob Danladi, aged 16, accidentally shot his friend Titus Joseph, 15, in the stomach while they were playing with a Dane gun owned by Danladi's father, a member of a local vigilante group. The gun was reportedly fully loaded at the time of the incident. Following the shooting, the victim was rushed to Suleja General Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. Authorities from the Niger State Police Command quickly responded, with personnel from the Maje Division evacuating Titus's body for further examination. Subsequently, Jacob Danladi and his father were taken into custody under allegations of negligence leading to culpable homicide. They have been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for an extensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. This incident raises serious concerns about gun safety and the implications of negligent firearm storage in households, particularly regarding access by minors. It highlights the potential risks associated with parents, especially those involved in vigilante groups, owning firearms and the urgent need for stricter regulations to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
