Shell restarts Bonga field after major offshore maintenance
Shell Nigeria has resumed production at the Bonga deepwater field after completing maintenance work ahead of schedule and without safety incidents.
Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited announced that it has restarted production at the Bonga deepwater field following a successful maintenance project, which had been completed 11 days ahead of its scheduled date. The maintenance work, which involved the Bonga floating production, storage, and offloading vessel, commenced on February 1, 2026, and was completed without a single safety incident, underscoring the commitment of Shell to maintaining high operational safety standards.
Over 1,000 personnel were involved in the maintenance exercise, with more than 95 percent identified as Nigerians, highlighting the increasing capacity and expertise of local professionals in the offshore oil and gas sector. The significant participation of Nigerian workers in this critical maintenance procedure not only emphasizes the local talent available for such operations but also demonstrates a shift towards greater local involvement in Nigeriaβs oil industry.
Furthermore, the managing director of Shell Nigeria, Ronald Adams, praised the dedicated efforts of the workforce and the efficient management of the project, which is expected to enhance production levels at the Bonga field. This resumed production is vital for both Shell and Nigeria's economy, as the Bonga field is one of the country's significant offshore oil assets, contributing substantially to national revenue.
