The warning from Renfe to its inspectors after a new incident on the Madrid-Sevilla line: "Everyone must be made aware, the smell of smoke is a clear sign of great risk"

Renfe issued a warning after a train emitted smoke due to a minor fire in one of its components during a journey from Madrid to Sevilla, stressing the importance of awareness among staff concerning smoke as a safety hazard.

On March 5th, a Renfe train traveling from Madrid to Sevilla entered the Santa Justa station emitting smoke due to a minor fire in its axle box. The incident occurred around 20:51, shortly after the train had departed from Madrid at 18:00, and while there were reports from passengers about a burning smell initiated after passing through Córdoba, the train managed to arrive only slightly delayed.

Fortunately, the situation did not escalate into a major emergency. The smoke originated from an axle box, which houses the bearings crucial for the train's wheel movement, indicating a potential fire risk. Upon arrival at the station, the train's engineer and maintenance workers quickly took action to extinguish the flames using fire extinguishers, averting a more serious crisis and ensuring passenger safety.

In light of this incident, Renfe has communicated to its inspectors the importance of being vigilant and proactive in recognizing signs of potential hazards, particularly emphasizing that noticing smoke is an evident indicator of significant danger. This reflects a dedication to improving safety protocols and training within the rail service, which is vital given the transportation's reliance on timely and secure operations.
