The use of industrial capacity recorded the worst January in ten years
Argentina's industrial capacity use hit its lowest level for January in a decade, registering at 53.6%.
The industrial capacity utilization in Argentina fell to 53.6% in January 2024, marking the lowest January figure in a decade, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics and Census (Indec). This decline is significant as it comes amid heightened competition due to the recent liberalization of imports, affecting local industries. Though the year began with a capacity use of 55%, there has been a downward trend since that initial recovery seen in September and October when usage peaked at 61%.
The data reveals a concerning pattern for the country's industrial sector, showcasing a steady decline from the beginning of the year when it initially seemed to be on an upward trajectory. Following performance peaks in late 2023, industrial capacity utilization decreased further to 57.7% in November and slightly rebounded to 53.8% in December before the sharp drop to 53.6% in January. This continued decrease indicates underlying issues that may hinder industrial growth, which could be attributed to the ongoing economic challenges within Argentina.
As the government considers measures to boost local production and competitiveness, this report calls attention to the importance of addressing the barriers faced by the industrial sector. With the lowest utilization levels, it poses questions about sustainability and the potential for future investment in the industry. Stakeholders will need to strategically innovate and adapt to the new market conditions if there is to be any hope of reversing the rampant decline in capacity utilization seen in the recent months.
