NANS slams police harassment of students, rent hike in Southwest
The National Association of Nigerian Students has condemned police harassment and rising accommodation costs affecting students in the Southwest region of Nigeria.
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone D has issued a strong statement criticizing the increasing cases of police harassment and the rising costs of accommodation for students in the region. During a press conference held in Akure, Ondo State, Zonal Coordinator Josiah Adeyemo emphasized that students have faced significant intimidation by law enforcement officers and exploitation from landlords. This situation has created a hostile environment for students, who are already dealing with the challenges of academic life.
Adeyemo highlighted the need for urgent intervention by both the government and law enforcement agencies to address these issues. He mentioned that reports of police harassment include unlawful stops, searches, and extortion of students, behaviors that undermine the safety and rights of young people in educational institutions. The NANS officials stressed that students should feel secure and protected while pursuing their education, rather than being subjected to further risks by those tasked with their protection.
The statement from NANS calls for a collaborative effort between students, educational institutions, and government bodies to rectify these challenges. The meeting, which included Chairmen of the NANS Joint Campus Committee from all six Southwest states, serves as a rallying point for student advocacy, demanding accountability and respect for the rights of students in Nigeria.
