David Gilmour's guitar from Pink Floyd was auctioned for about R$ 76 million
A guitar used by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd was sold at auction for approximately R$ 76 million, making it the most expensive guitar ever auctioned.
A Fender Stratocaster, famously known as the "Black Strat", that was used by David Gilmour in multiple Pink Floyd albums was sold for a staggering US$ 14.55 million (around R$ 76 million) at a New York auction, as reported by auction house Christie’s. This sale not only marked a significant financial achievement but also made the guitar the most expensive one ever auctioned, breaking the previous record of six million dollars set in 2020 for a guitar owned by Nirvana's Kurt Cobain.
The Black Strat was utilized during the instrument's tenure in iconic albums released between 1970 and 1983, including classics like "The Dark Side of the Moon", "Wish You Were Here", "Animals", and "The Wall", highlighting its immense cultural significance in rock music history. Furthermore, the guitar was previously auctioned in 2019 by Gilmour himself for US$ 3.9 million (approximately R$ 14.9 million at that time), indicating a substantial increase in its value over just a few years.
Aside from Gilmour's guitar, the auction featured several noteworthy items, including a custom guitar made for Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, which sold for US$ 11.56 million, and a blue Fender Mustang that was famously used by Cobain in the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" music video, fetching a price of US$ 6.9 million. This auction reflects the ever-growing market for rock memorabilia and the significant value placed on iconic instruments by collectors and fans alike.
