Surveillance for hydrocarbons and clean beaches for Holy Week: Rocío Nahle

Veracruz Governor Rocío Nahle announced ongoing surveillance for hydrocarbon waste along the coastline to ensure clean beaches ahead of Holy Week.

Rocío Nahle García, the Governor of Veracruz, has reported that the Civil Protection Secretariat is maintaining permanent surveillance along the Veracruz coast to monitor potential movements of hydrocarbon waste detected recently on the southern and central beaches of the state. This initiative comes in coordination with federal and environmental authorities to ensure clean beaches as the Holy Week vacation period approaches, as well as to create safe conditions for fishing activities.

Nahle emphasized that approximately eight days ago, remnants of hydrocarbons were identified on the beaches of Pajapan, which triggered alerts and investigations into the source of the material. The proactive measures taken by the government and agencies aim to manage the contamination effectively and protect local ecosystems during the peak tourism season of Holy Week, a significant vacation period for many Mexicans.

After conducting maritime patrols and satellite monitoring over an area exceeding 500 square kilometers, Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) confirmed that the incident was caused by a spill from a private vessel near Sánchez Magallanes. This revelation underscores the ongoing challenges posed by maritime activities to coastal environmental health and highlights the importance of governmental oversight in safeguarding the region's resources and clean beach preparation for the influx of visitors during the holiday week.
