Germany would be top destination for Iranians fleeing war – report
A report indicates that Germany is expected to be the primary destination for Iranians fleeing potential conflict due to ongoing aggressions from the US and Israel.
A recent report from the Rockwool Foundation Berlin suggests that in the event of increased military aggression from the US and Israel, Germany is poised to become the primary destination for fleeing Iranians. According to the study, 28% of potential war refugees from Iran consider Germany their top choice for refuge. This significant figure highlights the concerns surrounding mass migration from Iran, where socio-political unrest and conflict could drive thousands to seek asylum in Europe.
In addition to Iranians, the report also notes that 14% of Lebanese migrants may similarly choose Germany as their place of safety. The research draws on a Gallup survey conducted for 2024, reinforcing the notion that ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region are likely to displace populations. The presence of well-established Iranian and Lebanese communities in Germany could further bolster its appeal as a destination for those escaping conflict and instability.
Christian Dustmann, the director of the Rockwool Foundation, emphasizes that the existing diasporas in Germany may serve as a support system for new arrivals, making the transition easier for potential refugees. This predicted increase in migration will compel EU countries to reconsider their immigration policies and responses, particularly as they brace for the implications of a potential influx of refugees from Iran and Lebanon, highlighting the broader impact of international conflict on global migration trends.
