BYD will launch electric car that charges in 5 minutes
Chinese automaker BYD plans to compete with Porsche and BMW in the luxury electric vehicle market with a premium car that can be charged in just five minutes.
BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer, is gearing up to challenge well-established luxury automakers like Porsche and BMW in the European market with its latest offering, the Z9 GT, a premium electric car that boasts an impressive charging capability. Demonstrated for the first time, BYD's 'lightning charging' technology allows the vehicle to achieve a remarkable 70% charge in just five minutes, making it almost as quick to recharge as filling up a gasoline car. Even in extreme cold conditions, such as -30°C, the full charge time remains at a mere 12 minutes.
The Z9 GT is designed to cater to luxury consumers, with a range of up to 800 km on a single charge. Set to launch in Europe next month, including the UK market, the vehicle is expected to draw significant interest, although the pricing details have yet to be disclosed. According to Stella Li, BYD's international director, the Z9 GT is a significant milestone in the company's ambition to expand its rapid charging technology globally, demonstrating their commitment to innovation in the electric vehicle sector.
This strategic move follows BYD's aggressive expansion in the UK and Europe, where it has already established a presence with more affordable electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. By introducing a high-performance model like the Z9 GT, BYD aims to not only penetrate the luxury segment but also to redefine consumer expectations around electric vehicle capabilities. The introduction of ultra-fast charging technology could potentially reshape the competitive landscape in the electric vehicle market, especially as more consumers seek the convenience traditionally associated with gasoline vehicles.
