Coup Plot: Moraes Orders Imprisonment of Last Free Defendants of Core Group 3, Known as 'Black Kids'

Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the imprisonment of the remaining members of a coup conspiracy group, labeled as 'black kids', with sentences ranging from nearly two years to 24 years.

On Friday, Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes mandated the detention of the remaining free members of what has been referred to as Core Group 3 of a coup conspiracy in Brazil, known colloquially as 'black kids'. These individuals, part of a broader investigation into attempts to undermine the Brazilian government, now face sentences that vary from 1 year and 11 months to a maximum of 24 years in prison.

The arrests included prominent military figures, such as Army Colonel Bernardo Romão Correa Netto, who was taken to the Army Police Battalion in Brasília. Other members, like Colonel Fabrício Moreira de Bastos, were detained in Palmas, while Lieutenant Colonel Sérgio Cavaliere was transported to Rio de Janeiro's military battalion. The detention of these individuals comes after the court had previously upheld the sentences of several other group members who had already been incarcerated under preventive measures.

The decision to imprison these defendants was unanimous by the First Chamber of the Supreme Court on the 25th of last month, affirming the judicial system's stance against those involved in the conspiracy. The ongoing legal actions highlight Brazil's struggle with political stability and the implications of authority misuse within military ranks, showing a firm governmental willingness to address attempts to subvert democratic processes.
