The new list of food and basic goods that will have a profit margin cap
The Greek government has issued a final list of 63 food and essential items subject to a profit margin cap to combat profiteering.
The Greek Ministry of Development, led by Minister Takis Theodorikakos, has published a final list consisting of 63 food and essential items that will now be subject to a profit margin ceiling. This decision aims to tackle rising instances of profiteering, particularly during challenging economic times. The items included in this list span a wide range of everyday goods crucial for consumers, ensuring fair pricing amid inflationary pressures.
Included in the list are fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as personal hygiene products, which are vital for maintaining daily health and well-being. Among the specific items listed are rice, various types of flour, fresh and frozen fish, various meats (such as chicken, beef, lamb, and goat), milk (both full-fat and low-fat), feta cheese, Gouda cheese, olive oil, frozen vegetables, white sugar, coffee, detergents, soaps, paper products, margarine, baby diapers, and pet food. By regulating the profit margins on these essential goods, the government aims to alleviate the financial burden on households.
This cap on profit margins represents a significant regulatory step, reflecting the government's commitment to ensuring that consumers do not face undue price hikes on necessary commodities. It is part of broader efforts to stabilize the economy and protect citizens during times of economic strain. The implementation of this measure will be closely monitored to gauge its effectiveness in curbing price escalations and to safeguard against potential exploitative practices in the market.
