Director of AICM acknowledges that remodeling will not be ready for the 2026 World Cup; what works are pending?

The director of the Mexico City International Airport has stated that not all remodeling works will be completed in time for the 2026 World Cup.

Admiral Juan José Padilla, the director general of the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), has acknowledged that the airport's remodeling will not finish prior to the commencement of the 2026 World Cup. He emphasized that work is progressing rapidly, yet after the event starts in three months, some projects will continue but on a reduced scale. He expressed hopes that the upcoming Easter holidays would serve as a test run for their capabilities.

In a radio interview with Ciro Gómez Leyva, Padilla outlined several specific sections that will not be completed in time, including portions of the Terminal 1 outpatient area, baggage claim areas, elevators, drainage systems, parking, and roadway improvements. Although these aspects will still be in progress during the World Cup, efforts will be made to ensure that some completed parts will be operational to accommodate passengers traveling during the event.

The acknowledgment of remaining works raises significant implications regarding the airport's readiness for an influx of international visitors during a major sporting event. With many travelers relying on the AICM for their arrival in Mexico, the incomplete projects could potentially impact their experience and highlight the need for increased efforts to manage the airport's ongoing developments while hosting a global audience.
