The New Prime Minister of Nepal Will Be a Rapper. A Youth Rebellion Brought Him to Power
Nepal's parliamentary elections have culminated in the election of rapper Balendra Shah as the new Prime Minister, following a youth-led uprising.
In Nepal's recent parliamentary elections, the centrist National Independent Party (RSP) emerged victorious, claiming 182 out of 275 seats, with 35-year-old Balendra Shah set to become the new Prime Minister. Shah, a former mayor of Kathmandu, gained significant fame through his music that often critiques the ruling elite. This election marks a pivotal moment following mass demonstrations last September, which resulted in significant loss of life and the eventual fall of the previous government.
The elections, held on March 5, are the first since these significant protests, demonstrating the changing political landscape in Nepal. The oldest party, the Nepali Congress (NC), secured only 38 seats, while the previous ruling party, the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) under former Prime Minister Khadka Prasad Oli, garnered only 25 seats. Shah's rise to power is indicative of the discontent among the populace, particularly the youth, who are seeking change and accountability from their leaders.
Shah's campaign promises focused on fighting against the entrenched corruption and inefficiency perceived within the current political framework. As he takes office, there is speculation on how his background in music and grassroots politics will influence his leadership style and policy-making, especially considering he is the first Prime Minister from the plains region of southern Nepal, indicating a potentially new era in Nepalese politics that emphasizes regional representation and youth engagement.
