ELTA Briefly: After STT Raids – Falling Ratings for S. Skvernelis, S. Bartkus Announced Resigning from LTOU Leadership Positions

Recent polls reveal declining public support for Saulius Skvernelis amid a major corruption investigation, along with news of Simonas Bartkus resigning from his position as CEO of Lithuanian Airports.

On Friday, party ratings were released indicating a significant drop in public support for Saulius Skvernelis, the leader of the Democratic party, who is currently implicated in a large-scale corruption case involving the State Plant Protection Service. The latest survey conducted for Delfi by a market research firm shows that Skvernelis's ratings have fallen by more than 5 percentage points. In light of this, there’s considerable public interest in leadership changes, with many respondents favoring former Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė as a potential successor to the Prime Minister position.

In addition to political developments, the report highlighted increasing water levels in the Nerya River, leading to flooding in the Radikiai settlement of Kaunas district, affecting a total of 20 homes. This natural disaster adds further strain on the local government, already beleaguered by political controversies. The situation necessitates immediate response measures to alleviate impacts on residents and restore normalcy in the area.

Lastly, Simonas Bartkus, the CEO of Lithuanian Airports, announced his resignation from the leadership role, effective since the beginning of July. His departure from such an essential position within the aviation sector coincides with the ongoing political and social turbulence, indicating potential shifts in management strategies at Lithuanian airports in light of recent events. This could also impact national transportation policies as Lithuania continues to navigate both corruption allegations and public service integrity issues.
