Who the Region Blames for the Damage to the Undersea Water Supply Pipeline of Aegina
Authorities in Attica Region attribute the recent damages to the undersea water supply pipeline of Aegina to the Municipality and the Decentralized Administration, following complaints from residents about unsuitable drinking water.
In a recent clarification regarding the undersea water supply pipeline for Aegina, the Attica Region has placed the blame on the local Municipality, deeming it the sole responsible entity for the ongoing issues, as well as pointing fingers at the Decentralized Administration for the sealing of certain wells. The residents have expressed their dissatisfaction through protests, voicing concerns about the quality of the drinking water they have been receiving, which has been deemed unsuitable. This situation has highlighted the pressing need for accountability and effective management in public utilities.
The undersea pipeline project, which began in 2015, was supposed to resolve the long-standing water supply issues on the island. It was finally completed on December 6, 2023, with the contractor responsible for its maintenance for the next three years. Just weeks after its delivery, however, the island experienced a significant malfunction on January 24, 2024, which resulted in a halt to the water supply. This malfunction has triggered a wave of concern among the residents, who have been left vulnerable to the repercussions of poor water quality.
Regional Governor Nikos Hardalias has taken swift action following the damage, seeking immediate repairs and filing a criminal complaint against all responsible parties on February 2, 2024. This development marks a critical point as authorities aim to restore the trust of the residents while addressing the shortcomings in the management of essential services. The incident underscores the importance of reliable infrastructure and oversight in maintaining public health, especially in island communities where water supply is of utmost necessity.
